About the artist
Slava Ilyayev paints landscapes in which color and surface carry the emotional force of the scene. Trees, paths and water recur, often shifting into bright, seasonal palettes that emphasize light and movement.
He applies oil paint with a palette knife, layering thick strokes into sculptural relief and then drawing or carving into the surface. His approach brings together Eastern and Western traditions with an expressive, post-Impressionist handling of paint.
