About the artist

Roy Lichtenstein became a leading figure in Pop Art through paintings that reworked comic strips, advertisements and other mass-media images. Strong outlines, cropped scenes and speech balloons give many works the directness of printed popular imagery.

He translated printing effects such as Ben-Day dots into carefully controlled painting and printmaking, while also working in sculpture. Repeated dots, flat color and abrupt changes in scale make ordinary visual sources feel newly self-conscious and graphic.
