About the artist
Douglas Hofmann is known for figurative paintings, especially portraits of women, ballet scenes and quiet interiors. His work combines carefully observed anatomy with settings and poses that evoke earlier European painting.
He trained in drawing and painting from the model and adopted layered oil-painting methods associated with Old Master practice. He has also developed prints and lithographs from his paintings, carrying their tonal character into editions.
