About the artist

Alexander Calder is best known for mobiles: abstract constructions whose elements shift in response to air currents. Carefully balanced shapes create changing relationships of color, line, and space, so each viewing offers a slightly different arrangement.

His practice also included static stabiles, wire figures, and miniature performances with his hand-built Circus. Calder worked with simple materials such as wire, sheet metal, and paint, giving lightweight forms a sense of play and movement.
